L'Écosse (en anglais Scotland, en gaélique écossais Alba) est l'un des trois pays qui forment la Grande-Bretagne, avec l'Angleterre et le pays de Galles, auxquels est adjointe la province de l'Irlande du Nord pour former le Royaume-Uni de Grande Bretagne et d'Irlande du nord. Elle est située dans la partie septentrionale de la Grande Bretagne.

La capitale de l'Écosse est Édimbourg, le centre financier et administratif, mais la plus grande ville est Glasgow qui est historiquement plus industrielle. Les autres grandes villes sont Aberdeen et Dundee, suivie par Stirling, Perth, et Inverness.

La plus grande église est l'église d'Écosse (The Church of Scotland) - une église reformée presbytérienne. [1]

Le gaélique écossais et le scots sont reconnus en tant que langues nationales. Robert Burns est l'auteur en scots le plus connu.

Il y a un grand mouvement indépendantiste en Écosse : le Parti National d'Écosse (SNP, Scottish National Party) est le deuxième plus grand groupe au parlement écossais, avec 25 % des voix aux dernières législatives. Le Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), extrême-gauche républicaine et indépendantiste, approche, quant à lui, les 8 % des voix.

On parle souvent en Écosse de the 'Auld Alliance (« La Vieille Alliance ») - entre l'Écosse et la France (et la Norvège), l'alliance traditionnelle contre l'Angleterre, signée en 1295.

Les billets de banque officiels au Royaume-Uni sont imprimés par une banque centrale, la Bank of England, mais des banques régionales peuvent imprimer leurs propres billets: en Écosse ce sont les banques Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank et Royal Bank of Scotland qui impriment les billets. Un billet de banque écossais est accepté presque partout en Angleterre, alors que les billets du Bank of England sont acceptés partout (les lois financières étant différentes dans les pays constituants du Royaume-Uni, les Écossais ne sont pas obligés d'accepter les billets anglais, et les Anglais ne sont pas obligés d'accepter les billets écossais, mais tout le monde est obligé d'accepter les pièces de monnaie d'au moins une livre).
